Outcomes Research Proposal
Deadline: May 31, 2009
Program Area: Outcomes Research
Purpose: The WOCN is a clinician-based professional organization of over 4800 members who treat individuals with wounds, ostomies, and incontinence and are committed to cost-effective and outcome-based health care.
The purpose of this project is to evaluate the impact of WOC specialty nursing practice on the quality and cost of care to identify the contributions of WOC nurses to the U.S. Health Care System.
The specific aim of the research project is to determine if care delivered by WOC specialty nurses (i.e., nurse credentialed by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board [WOCNCB] in one or more of the specialty areas of practice [wound, ostomy, or continence care] and/or is a graduate of a WOCN-accredited Nursing Education Program) improves patient outcomes.
Program Information & How to Apply: Review the full “Request for Proposals (RFP)” before applying. Directions and application materials are included in the RFP.
Eligibility: The award is limited to institutions within the United States and U.S. possessions. Applicants must be United States citizens and willing to enter into a signed agreement with WOCN for the conduct of the research project. For-profit organizations, non-profit organizations, and public or private institutions, such as universities, colleges, or hospitals are eligible to apply for this award.
Selection Criteria: A comparative designed research project is solicited to address patient outcomes of WOC nurse specialty practice compared to patients not receiving WOC nurse care. Approaches to be considered will include prospective or retrospective designs, experimental, quasi-experimental, secondary analysis of existing data, and mixed methods. Priority consideration will be given to the research project that provides the most comprehensive data across the spectrum of WOC nurse practice and settings that are relevant to the research objectives. Applications will be selected based on following criteria:
Significance: Study addresses a clearly stated purpose to achieve the aims/objective of the project.
Approach: The conceptual framework and/or theoretical design is/are adequately developed/conceptualized, logical, well integrated, well reasoned, and appropriate to the aims of the project. Applicant acknowledges potential problem areas and considers alternative tactics. The proposed investigation is feasible.
Research Design, and Methods (Goals, Hypotheses and Procedures): The research questions and/or the hypotheses to be tested are theoretically/conceptually consistent with the framework or design, clearly stated and scientifically plausible. The hypothesis is stated in measurable terms and reflects a familiarity or understanding of the research problem; an awareness of similar projects that have been previously undertaken; an adequate knowledge of related activities in the field; and the pertinent literature. Study design allows the specific aims to be accomplished. Plans for recruitment and retention of subjects/participants are adequate and appropriate to the goals of the study. Sampling methods and sample size, including power estimates, are well described and appropriate. Study variables are well defined. Controls are appropriate (if applicable). Data collection methods, instruments, and procedures are well described and adequate. Data analysis procedures, including involvement of a biostatistician, are appropriate and consistent with the study’s objectives and design. The proposed investigation will provide data required that are directly applicable to the purpose of the investigation. The expected results of the study can make a clear contribution to the knowledge about the value of WOC nursing.
Investigator(s): Investigator(s) is/are appropriately educated, prepared, trained, and well suited to conduct this work. The proposed work is appropriate to the experience of the researchers and within the applicant's ability. The principal investigator's history of professional experiences in this research area is extensive. The investigator(s) clearly demonstrate(s) competence for conducting work in this area. The investigative team brings complementary and integrated expertise to the project (if applicable).
Resources/Environment: Scientific environment in which the work will be done contributes to the probability of success. Proposed study appropriately uses collaborative arrangements.
Facilities: There is evidence of adequate institutional support. The institution will provide necessary support to ensure that the study can be satisfactorily completed. The equipment for the study is suitable and sufficient.
Protection of Human Subjects from Research Risk: If applicable, the study's design, sample, and instruments respect and protect human subjects from research risk and their confidentiality are addressed in the selection process and in the conduct of the study. Plans to include male and female subjects, children, and racial/ethnic groups are adequate and appropriate to the goals of the research.
Budget and Period of Support: The percent effort listed for the PI/investigators is appropriate to the work proposed. Each budget category is realistic and justified in terms of the aims and methods. The budget is appropriate to accomplish the proposed work. Purchases are explained including the need for particular material, software, and equipment, etc. Opportunities for other resources are explored, if relevant.
