At the first ostomy consensus
presentation, the topic centered on pouching system wear time.
The principles were presented and the discussion centered upon
the definition of wear time, an outcome to begin to establish
standards in managing the patient with a fecal and urinary diversion.
This year’s presentation will build upon wear time and
begin to examine other critical ostomy based outcomes. More
than a lecture, this session will rely on interaction between
the moderators and attendees, as expert clinicians and clinical
investigators, to establish the standards for measuring essential
outcomes when providing care to patients with ostomies. A white
paper will be posted on the WOCN Web site that will serve as
the basis for this discussion. It is a “not to be missed
session” for anyone planning, delivering, or supervising
the care of a person with an ostomy. |

Pain management is a topic
that has relevance to all aspects of WOC nursing. The patients
that we provide care for may be suffering from acute or chronic

an underlying disease. Pain management in the older adult is
of particular concern, particularly in those with cognitive
impairment. This session will discuss pain management as it
relates to older adults. Specific topics will include a discussion
of differences in pain assessment in the cognitively impaired
patient, as well as differences in response to treatment regimens
in the older adult. |

In this presentation, Dr.
Campinha-Bacote answers this question by taking health care
professionals on a journey towards cultural competence in health
care delivery. This journey includes examining her practice
model of cultural competence. Dr. Campinha-Bacote will discuss
clinical application of the model’s constructs of cultural
desire, cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural skill,
and cultural encounters as it relates to wound, ostomy, and
continence care to culturally and ethnically diverse populations.
It is the intent of this session to provide health care providers
with a practice model of cultural competence for positively
impacting on the quality of wound, ostomy, and continence care
in a culturally conscious manner. |
