Part of the responsibility of leadership at
the local level is to maintain financial records and to encourage
research in wound, ostomy, and continence nursing. In order
to assist with this responsibility, two leaders from WOCN
will discuss their roles in the organization and encourage
questions and discussion.
The new director of the Center for Clinical Investigation
(CCI) will provide an introduction to the CCI board members
and explain its aims and planned activities for the year.
She will be available to answer questions from participants.
The WOCN treasurer will discuss fiduciary responsibility,
budgeting, recordkeeping, and reporting at the regional/affiliate
level. |

managers, and mentors, in addition to managing professional
and personal responsibilities. This session focuses the WOCN

tasks and assignments, and prioritizing in a way that maximizes
output. |

Lower Extremity Disease and the Role of ABI Testing

a hands-on experience with measuring ankle brachial index (ABI)
as well as discuss the typical characteristics and key treatment
issues for the three most common cause of lower extremity wounds:

(004) (T) Simplifying Complex Fistula
Management using a Case-based Approach

This program will engage the attendee to participate
in a case based discussion of the complex issues typical in
the management of a patient with a fistula. Principles of fistula
management, pathophysiology, and goal setting will be reviewed
within the context of cases presented. Attendees will refine
their critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills
through a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of
various skin protection, equipment options, and containment
techniques. Efficiency, effectiveness, and appropriateness will
be discussed based upon the patient’s goals, available
resources, and the health care setting. Technical skills required
for competent fistula containment such as sizing and preparing
the pouch, using adhesives, straight drainage, filling uneven
skin surfaces, odor control, troughing, closed suction, and
negative pressure wound therapy will be practiced under the
guidance of the presenters.

This session will focus on the requirements and
responsibilities of the WOC nurse who wishes to serve as a clinical
preceptor for students enrolled in a WOC nurse education program.
Principles of adult learning will be discussed, along with effective
strategies for enhancing the experiences of the adult learner.
Various techniques will be presented, as well as discussion
on managing challenging situations. Completion of this workshop
will satisfy the preceptor workshop requirements to qualify
as a clinical preceptor. |
