Attention All New York Nurses: We Need Your Help

To all New York State Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses,

We have all had ostomy patients who sadly did not have coverage for their ostomy supplies, or were unable to get exactly what they need, or had to make do with an inadequate amount of supplies. In New York State, bills have recently been introduced in the New York Assembly (A8137) and the Senate (S5937) for the legislative session beginning January 2014, requiring health insurers to include full coverage for ostomy supplies. Previous bills have been introduced and have died in committee.

A small committee of NYS WOC nurses with the help of the United Ostomy Associations of America has put together an advocacy effort, and needs your help to make sure this does not happen again. We need a strong show of support from any stakeholder in the process. That includes the strongest advocate that ostomy patients generally have: YOU, the ostomy nurse.

The advocacy process is not difficult, and includes such things as petitions (hard copy as well as online); letters of support from health care providers, organizations, patients, and families; and contacting your home legislators voicing your support. In this message, we have the following 5 links to help you:

  1. Action Plan
    • Includes exact details and actions that you can take
  2. Talking points
    • For you to use in writing your letters, emails and contacting your representative
  3. How to Contact NY Senators and Assemblymen/women
    • Step-by-step instructions to help navigate the State Senate and State Assembly websites to find your Senator and Assemblymen/women
  4. Sample letter
    • For anyone to use – including you, patients, concerned ones, organizations, etc.
  5. Sample petition

The bill is currently in the Insurance Committees of both the Senate and the Assembly. We need your support to move it forward and help our patients.

We have all experienced those patients who have not been able to get the needed supplies.

We CANNOT let this bill die in committee like the previous ones.

It is up to ALL of us to get this bill passed and your participation is crucial.
