Last week the New York State Legislature approved legislation which mandates that all health insurers in the state provide coverage of ostomy supplies. The legislation states that "every policy which provides medical coverage that includes coverage for physician services in a physician's office and every policy which provides major medical or similar comprehensive-type coverage shall include coverage for equipment and supplies used for the treatment of ostomies." The coverage will be subject to annual deductibles and coinsurance.
Many WOCN members in the State of New York dedicated themselves over the past year to seeing that this legislation was enacted. Without their determination this legislation would have likely stayed dormant, as it had in previous years. The legislation will now be sent to Governor Cuomo for signature.
The WOCN Society looks forward to working with the state during implementation of this legislation to ensure that it is as beneficiary friendly as allowable. This legislation marks an important first step in our effort to protect our patients rights to the medical supplies that they so desperately need. The WOCN Society looks forward to building on the momentum gained in New York and would ask each of you to consider taking up a similar cause in your state.
