Updates on Society Publications

We are pleased to release the Avoidable vs. Unavoidable Pressure Ulcer (Injury) Position Paper. It is reasonable to state that not all pressure ulcers are avoidable or preventable due to clinical complexities and comorbidities commonly encountered in the healthcare environment. The purpose of this position paper is to provide support to the theory that some pressure ulcers are unavoidable and to provide supporting evidence and/or expert opinion.

This a public document that can be accessed through the Document Library.

The Society's Guideline for Prevention and Management of Pressure Ulcers (Injuries) is now available on the National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC)The NGC is a public resource for summaries of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.

The full guideline can be purchased through the WOCN Bookstore. Members should log in to the Member Center to receive a discount.

Competitive Bidding

In 2016, the Society reported on the possibility of ostomy and urological supplies being included in Medicare's competitive bidding program. Ostomy and urological supplies are not one-size-fits-all, and it is imperative that they do not become part of this program.

The Society released a two-phase response plan for this issue, including a document that outlines the implications of competitive bidding.

We need your help to prevent ostomy and urological supplies from becoming part of the competitive bidding program. We encourage you to:
  • Please read the competitive bidding document and share it with legislators, patients, clinicians and advocates.
  • Sign up to receive alerts about ways you can get involved.

GLOBIAD International Validation Study

In 2016, the University Centre for Nursing and Midwifery developed the Ghent Global IAD Categorisation Tool (GLOBIAD), which categorizes lesions caused by incontinence (IAD) in four categories.

In 2017, the University aims to validate GLOBIAD by examining the degree of agreement between health professionals by categorizing photographs of IAD through a two-phase survey process. Over 20 countries are involved in this process.

You are invited to participate in the first phase of the international validation of the GLOBIAD by participating in the surveyThe survey will take approximately 25 minutes.

You will be invited to participate in the second phase of this project, which will commence one week after completing the survey.

This project and the outcomes will benefit clinical practice globally and will improve outcomes of patients suffering from incontinence and skin related issues.
