Improve Outcomes for Pediatric Patients

Ferne Elsass, MSN, RN, CPN, CWON, a clinical practice and education specialist at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, will be presenting (PP415) Pediatric Wound Care: One Size Does Not Fit All When Caring For Children on Monday, May 22, 2017, from 4:20 pm to 5:20 pm. This session is worth 1 contact hour.

Find out from Ferne why this session is imperative for improving patient outcomes!

Why should attendees go to your session?
Children are often left out of the equation when it comes to wound care. This may be as simple as when dressings are changed to the type and size of dressing that is used. My session provides a perspective that is rarely focused on: a child's needs. Pediatric wound care is another aspect of our practice that includes the developmental aspects of the patient into the decisions of how one would practice.

What are the key takeaways?
The most important feature is using a patients developmental level as an advantage, rather that a disadvantage, when it comes to wound care. Using what makes each child special as a tool in your toolbox can improve patient care outcomes.

What can WOC nurses use from your session to incorporate into their daily practice?
WOC nurses can take away the ability to walk into a wound care situation with a child and a have basic understanding of the types of interactions needed to improve the relationship with a pediatric patient, as well as with the patient's parents and caregivers.
