Ways to Help During Hurricane Harvey

It's in a nurse's nature to want to help during times of disaster. In some ways, disaster is a nurse's call to arms. The WOCN® Society has received numerous inquiries from members on how they can donate or volunteer to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Below are a few ways that nurses can help.
Donate & Volunteer
All volunteers are strongly encouraged to work with disaster relief agencies. To find ways you can donate your money or time to support victims impacted by Hurricane Harvey, please visit the following websites:
Texas Board of Nursing

The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) implemented a Disaster Licensing Procedure for nurses who wish to volunteer. Nurses from non-compact states need to follow the procedure listed below:

  • Download an endorsement application:
  • Write "HARVEY/THE NAME OF EMPLOYING FACILITY" in capital letters at the top of the application.
  • Complete the form and return it to the BON:
  • If the applicant has no current discipline or other eligibility issue, they will be issued a temporary license to practice for the purpose of responding to the declared emergency.
  • This license will expire in 120 days or at the end of the declared emergency, whichever comes first.
  • A list of all approved temporary licenses issued for this purpose will be maintained by the BON.
Online Safety Check
Visit the American Red Cross Safe and Well site to find family and friends or to register yourself as safe.

Visit the Facebook Safety Check to see a list of your friends who are marked safe or to mark yourself as safe.
Thank you for your continued support and your efforts to help Hurricane Harvey victims.
