Why is this topic important to the WOC nurse and/or the non-WOC nurse?
The management of incontinence is the single most important factor that the clinical beside nurse can do to prevent the occurrence of IAD. Both WOC nurses and non-WOC nurses have difficulty recognizing IAD and distinguishing IAD from pressure injuries. Therefore, proper prevention of IAD (incontinence management) and recognition of IAD in the clinical setting are imperative to optimize patient outcomes.

What do you hope attendees will learn from your session?
Attendees should learn that evidence exists to 1) support the proper selection of products to manage incontinence and 2) that nurses can be empowered to manage incontinence as independently as possible before the need to consult a WOC nurse. Both of these objectives can be accomplished by a standardized approach to incontinence management (i.e. an algorithm or decision tree).

How can attendees transform their practice with the information from your session?
Attendees will have exposure to the algorithm developed to management incontinence. This can spark the creation of nursing guidelines or unit-based guidelines in other settings for incontinence management that are evidence-based.
