WOC Care Products at Risk for Competitive Bidding

President Obama released his proposed FY17 budget in March, which included a provision to expand Medicare's Competitive Bidding Program to new product categories, including inhalation drugs; all prosthetic and orthotics; and ostomy, tracheostomy and urological supplies.

The main issue of concern with including ostomy and urological supplies in the competitive bidding program is that it will almost certainly lead to patient complications, as suppliers will be bound by artificial bids to supply products based on price, not by patient need.

This bidding system forces patients into a "one-size-fits-all" ostomy solution - a disaster for ostomy patients. The WOCN Society is working to address this issue and will call for member engagement and assistance as we move forward. Read more.
Well Wishes to WOCN Society Member Kevin Emmons
Kevin Emmons, DrNP, RN, AGPCNP-BC, CWCN, DAPWCA, has been a WOC nurse for more than 10 years. Kevin is the clinical assistant professor at the Rutgers University School of Nursing-Camden WOCNEP in Camden, NJ.

Kevin is also in the US Army Reserves, and will be deploying to the Middle East in just a few short months. The WOCN Society would like to wish Kevin the best of luck during his deployment:

Kevin, upon your deployment, please know that we deeply appreciate your courage, devotion and service. You are an important part of what makes our country strong. We are proud to have WOC nurses serve our country.
