Help Your Patients Make Meaningful Changes

Opening Keynote speaker Kathleen Watson
Kate Watson, MA, EdM
Kathleen (Kate) Watson, MA, EdM, is the owner of Watson Wellness Promotion. Kate is a consultant and trainer in Motivational Interviewing for hospitals, social service organizations and schools, and she is currently working to obtain her DrPHc. All that, plus she's the opening keynote speaker at the 50th Annual Conference! Don't miss her presentation "Motivational Interviewing" on Sunday, Jun. 3, 2018, 10:00 am ET.

What is your favorite part about giving motivational talks? I am a professional trainer of Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills for health care providers. My favorite part of my role as a trainer is that I get to help people uncover the ways that they can bring the best of their patients.

How did you get involved with Motivational Interviewing? I am a therapist by training, but I believe in lending the tools of psychology to other fields where it may be useful. After I first learned about MI, as a mental health professional, I discovered that physicians, nurses, dietitians, dentists and many other health care providers were practicing these skills to learn how to communicate more effectively with patients. I was excited to help spread the skills to other fields. Today, I train psychologists, social workers, physicians, nurses, teachers, police officers and even financial advisors.

What do you want the audience to take away from your presentation? I want the audience to walk away with a couple of simple techniques that they can begin using in their communication with patients, but also with their coworkers and family members. Most importantly, I hope the audience sees that these skills aren't just about being kind and respectful. MI is evidence-based practice. There are 40 years of research demonstrating the effectiveness of these skills.
