Submitting a Successful Abstract for WOCNext 2020

wocnext2020-abstractsHave you successfully managed a complicated clinical challenge in your practice? Have you completed a research study, process improvement project or developed an innovative program related to the wound, ostomy and continence (WOC) specialty? How about a series of case studies with successful outcomes? If so, submit an abstract for WOCNext 2020 in Cleveland, OH.

Submitting an abstract is an easy process and a great way to share your knowledge and skills with your peers. Additionally, for each poster presented, the poster author is eligible to receive 10 professional growth points (PGP) for use toward WOCNCB recertification.

A successful abstract is pertinent to WOC practice, clear, concise and well written. The abstract is a summary of the information to be shared on the poster. Abstract categories include research, case studies, and practice innovation. Guidelines to assist in the development of an abstract are available here. You may also want to review previously accepted abstracts to see what your colleagues have successfully submitted in the past.

If the abstract is accepted, you will present your poster at WOCNext 2020 during the always popular and exciting poster session. You could even win an award! The abstract will also be published in a supplement to the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing (JWOCN) and will be available on the WOCNext website.

ePosterThe electronic poster (ePoster) format will be offered again this year. If your abstract is chosen for this format, it will be displayed on a monitor in the Poster Hall. A paper poster will not be needed. The ePoster feedback from the last two events has been very positive and favorable.

All abstracts are blindly reviewed and rated by peer members of the WOCN Society using a valid and reliable tool. When evaluating abstracts, reviewers look for posters that will add to or enhance the body of knowledge pertinent to our specialty practice. Both the submission and review processes are online. Selected research abstracts will be presented orally at the event.

Tips for success:

  • Review the abstract submission process slideshow before starting your submission.
  • The deadline is the deadline.
  • Do not use names of individuals or facilities in the abstract.
  • Use generic names, not name brands, in the abstract and on the poster.
  • Cite the references used for your project in the abstract and on the bottom of the poster.
  • Only submit completed work. Work in progress will not be accepted. Wait until next year.
  • Follow the clear instructions!
  • The 300-word limit for the abstract does not include the title or authors.
  • Email or call the abstract chair with any questions. We want you to succeed and will answer any questions to the best of our ability. Someone has asked the same question before, so don’t feel embarrassed. Everyone was a novice poster presenter at one time.
  • The quality of our abstracts is phenomenal and most submissions are accepted. Follow the guidelines and go for it!
  • Remember, everyone doesn’t know your work. It doesn’t matter if you are a novice or expert WOC clinician. Sharing your knowledge and expertise will keep our specialty strong. You will be so glad you did!

Celebrate Ostomy Awareness Day 2019

To help celebrate, we have released a special bonus WOCTalk podcast episode. In this episode, we talk with Joanna Burgess, BSN, RN, CWOCN, a dedicated full scope wound, ostomy and continence (WOC) nurse living with two ostomies. Introducing New Enhancements to the Wound Treatment Associate (WTA®) Program

As the premier program offering basic wound care education, the WOCN® Society strives to ensure that the WTA Program remains accurate, relevant, and current. Periodic reviews of the content are conducted to ensure this, and our most recent review of content has led the Society to implement some exciting new enhancements! Effective as of today, October 1, 2019, the following changes have been made to the WTA Program:


Additional Clinical Skill Competencies

In order to appeal to a greater audience across multiple practice settings, a critical change was made to the clinical skill competencies portion of the WTA Program. Previously, all program participants had to successfully complete all four clinical skill competencies. Now, Course Coordinators will be offered a suite of six clinical skill competencies to choose from and tailor based on their students' specific practice settings. This exciting enhancement will ensure that these crucial WOC nurse extenders are able to learn and test skills that directly relate to their practice setting, while improving their professional practice and ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.

 

Increased Continuing Education Contact Hours

Following a careful review of WTA Program content, supporting materials and feedback from participants and Course Coordinators, the decision was made to increase the number of ANCC-accredited contact hours from 24 to 32.25.

 

Updated Terminology Added to Applicable Program Modules

Based on the need to provide the most up-to-date, evidence-based education, some minor edits were made to WTA Program education modules and resources to accurate reflect changes to terminology. These changes include updated terminology for support surfaces and pressure injuries.

 

About the WTA Program

Acknowledging the ever growing demand for wound care services in all health care settings, the WOCN Society developed this continuing educational program to:

  1. Educate and prepare more skilled wound care providers across settings, including the military.
  2. Enhance nurses’ ability to provide optimal care for patients with acute and chronic wounds as members of a collaborative wound care team.
  3. Provide the non-specialty nurse the ability to facilitate optimal care for patients with acute and chronic wounds under the direction of the WOC specialty nurse, WOC advanced practice registered nurse or physician.

This session will cover the evaluation and treatment of urinary retention, especially in the female, with emphasis on neurogenic bladder. Urinary retention is a poorly understood condition. Though the causation is generally attributed to either bladder or bladder outlet dysfunction, and an accurate diagnosis is often straightforward, it remains an under diagnosed condition. Treatment is dependent on the underlying causation. Often felt by the medical community to be extraordinarily complex, this session will outline a straight forward approach to the diagnosis and treatment options for the condition.

Because of its relationship with the peripheral, autonomic and central nervous systems, the skin constitutes a neuro-immuno-endocrine organ. Disorders affecting the nervous system directly or secondarily by infection or metabolic disturbances may manifest in the skin. This session will describe four disorders affecting the nervous system with cutaneous manifestations: Diabetes Mellitus, Neurofibromatosis, Parkinson’s Disease, and Syphilis. Pharmacological implications are emphasized.

Errors and omissions in medical documentation can lead to problems in the delivery of medical care, but they can also lead to problems in defending subsequent litigation even when the care itself was properly rendered. This presentation will identify common documentation errors and omissions that are commonly seized upon by plaintiffs attorneys in litigation, strategies to avoid them, and how to deal with any documentation problems in deposition.

A Brand New Clinical Tool from the WOCN Society

Introducing the Body Worn Absorbent Product Guide

Despite recent advances in multiple areas of continence management including pharmacotherapy, surgery, physiotherapy, and neuromodulation, evidence suggests that use of incontinence products remains the most prevalent strategy among adults with urinary or fecal incontinence. To address this gap, the WOCN Society developed an evidence- and consensus-based algorithm —The Body Worn Absorbent Product Guide. 

This new clinical tool is an evidence- and consensus-based algorithm for selection, use, and evaluation of body worn absorbent products for the management of individuals with urinary and/or fecal incontinence. This algorithm will help to fill the gap in resources available for first-line and WOC specialty practice nurses guiding optimal use of these products.
