The Society joined with WOCNCB to send comments to CMS contractors encouraging them to cover the use of night drainage bags with high output stomas for beneficiaries with an ileostomy. Current Medicare coverage policy will only allow for coverage of night drainage bags for beneficiaries who have a urinary diversion, but not those beneficiaries who have a bowel diversion. Updated products from manufactures now include wide-bore drainage spouts on some high output bags that allow for hook-up to a night drain bag making them useful for people with small bowel diversions with high output. WOCN has recommended that night drainage coverage be extended to those with ileostomies. We are still awaiting comment back from the contractors about the status of this request.
