Must-See Conference Session

Kimberly Masters, RN, BSN, MSN, CWCN, CCCN, a spinal cord injury nurse case manager, will be presenting (C306) What the WOC Nurse Needs to Educate Hospital Staff Nurses on Care of the Spinal Cord Injury Patient on Sunday, May 21, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm.

Read Kim's answers below for a sneak peek of this must-see session.

Why should attendees go to your session?
Working in a spinal cord clinic in the VA system, I have heard from many of my spinal cord injury (SCI) veterans that acute care nursing staff lacks the knowledge of a spinal cord patient's care needs. I want to share this information with WOC nurses so they are able to take the information and share it with the nursing staff in their facilities.

What are the key takeaways?
The key takeaways are neurogenic bowel and bladder and the treatments while in a hospital setting, autonomic dysreflexia and the dangers it could impose, as well as statistical facts.

What can WOC nurses use from your session to incorporate into their daily practice?
I hope WOC nurses will be able to use the information from the presentation to incorporate into their practice to educate acute care nursing staff when a SCI is admitted to the hospital. So few spinal cord patients are admitted to the hospital that WOC nurses need to be available to remind staff what steps are needed to care for the spinal cord injury patient. An acronym will list the SCI care needs while hospitalized.
