Member Spotlight: Collette Sengupta

In this edition of the WOCN® Society Member Spotlight, meet Collette Sengupta, BSN, RN, CWOCN, CFCN, NCIDQ. Learn about her unique journey into WOC nursing, passion for patient care and diabetic foot education, and her dedication to mentoring and professional growth.

WOC Nursing Journey

Nursing was a second career for Collette. She began her professional life as a kitchen and bath designer in California, but after moving to the East Coast and staying home with her children, she found her calling in nursing. Caring for her father-in-law, who had end-stage COPD with a trach, g-tube, and required suctioning, inspired her to pursue a nursing career. Appreciating the care provided by her father-in-law’s home care nurse, Collette wanted to start her career in home care—a choice she has never regretted.

Passion for Healthcare

Collette is passionate about the difference a WOC nurse can make in patients’ lives. Since earning her Certified Foot Care Nurse (CFCN) credential, she has developed a special focus on diabetic foot care and patient education. Her work allows her to make a tangible impact, helping patients achieve better outcomes and improving their quality of life.

Joining the WOCN Society

Collette joined the WOCN Society in 2011 to connect with other WOC nurses, promote the specialty, and grow professionally. She values the opportunity to learn from colleagues and participate in advancing the field of WOC nursing.

Proud Moments

One of Collette’s earliest patients had multiple severe pressure injuries and was paralyzed, undernourished, and deeply depressed. She recalls presenting him with a Do-Not-Resuscitate (DNR) form and offering him a choice: continue as he was or try to improve, with her support either way. Together, they made a plan he followed diligently, resulting in full healing of his wounds! This experience motivated Collette to pursue WOC certification and solidified her commitment to patient-centered care.

Collette finds pride in helping patients navigate life-changing challenges. She notes that her ostomy patients are particularly grateful for the skills and teaching that guide them through difficult transitions. Volunteering at the local level, including as Education Board Member and Public Policy Chair for the New England Chapter, has also allowed her to contribute to the profession beyond direct patient care.

Looking Ahead

Collette hopes to continue mentoring nurses, guiding them toward certification, and supporting excellence in patient care. She plans to do what she loves until retirement, ensuring her experience and knowledge benefit the next generation of WOC nurses.

Life Outside Nursing

Outside of her professional life, Collette enjoys reading, cooking, gardening, listening to music, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Thank you, Collette

Collette’s journey reminds us of the profound impact WOC nurses have on transforming patient care, mentoring colleagues, and advancing the specialty with compassion, dedication, and expertise.
